Adjusting for the previously mentioned legal matter reserve in the quarter, Non-compensation expenses of $633 million increased 20% sequentially. Adjusting for the previously mentioned legal matter reserve in the quarter, non-compensation expenses were $575 million, up 9% sequentially. While the third quarter typically experiences higher seasonal costs related to conferences and events, a large portion of this quarterly increase also supports firm-wide growth initiatives, including advisor recruiting, professional fees associated with increased underwriting activity, and higher investment sub-advisory fee expense.

Yeah, I mean, each period of volatility is different. So one of our best recruiting years in history was during the financial crisis when advisors were looking for a source of strength and stability. And with all the industry disruption and M&A and firms exiting the business, we were huge beneficiaries of that because we had a strong balance sheet, as we do today. We have a strong balance sheet, and I think we are viewed by advisors in the industry as a source of strength and stability for their businesses and for their clients. So we think that there's still movement just based on the pipelines and the discussions that we're having and the home office visits that we're having. And I've been traveling across the country meeting with very high quality prospects that are interested in moving. And so we're still optimistic about the pipelines and the recruiting activity going forward.

Last week, we had our global top financial advisor conference in Montreal. It was wonderful to spend time with our top advisors across our affiliation options from the US, Canada, and the UK. They are extremely pleased with Raymond James, expressing a deep appreciation for our unique advisor and client-focused culture, along with our robust platform. Just a week prior, we hosted all of our investment banking managing directors in Tampa, and they also conveyed enthusiasm for a unique combination of values and capabilities that enabled them to best serve clients. Since the CEO succession announcement last year, I have been spending a large portion of my time traveling to meet with as many advisors, bankers, associates, and clients as possible.

You know, IT, the technology expenses, we typically pull back on external support during the December quarter just because it's a little bit slower for those vendors as well even to bring people in. It's a relatively quiet quarter for conferences and trips and And it was also a relatively favorable quarter for legal and regulatory.

Hopefully, by then, we will have more clarity on other important variables, such as the outlook for investment banking revenues, the level of business development expenses as conferences and travel continue to ramp up, and the impact of recently closed and pending acquisitions.

So, you know, I would be very surprised that, you know, most of the things here in the second quarter we've postponed and pushed back. Unfortunately, due to the COVID spread, I would be very surprised if we are able to even exit the year at the $50 million run rate per quarter, unfortunately. And I say unfortunately because... You know, we really do want to get back to traveling again, to having the advisor recognition trips and the conferences. So, you know, I think that's kind of the glide path. It's probably a longer, a flatter glide path than we thought this time last quarter, unfortunately.

So we certainly have learned you can do a lot of things with less travel. There's a lot of things that require that face-to-face input. And, you know, frankly, we all know it from our own firms. There's a lot of the People are tired of not being together and not seeing each other and interacting, even though they like the flexibility. So we've got to find that balance. But the conferences are important culturally. They're important to get people together. It keeps their bond with the firm and for training development. I mean, there's a lot of facets, and they do cost money. But just as the investor conferences of many people on this firm will start back up post-COVID, some have been able to sneak some in. But, you know, you do them for the same reason, and so will we.
