The flow-through on the sales increase was held back somewhat by unfavorable mix and increased costs for travel and in-person customer events.

Can you talk about the aftermath of the DOBLE conference, and if you're seeing the type of engagement you want to see versus pre-COVID, how much of the strength is recovery and how much of it is new business, such as acquisitions or infrastructure spending, making its way to the utilities and renewables?

One of the things I'm really excited about is that when I had a chance to go to the And we were back up to normal attendance, which is a strong indicator that the utilities have kind of gotten past the COVID. Even up to last year, they were restricting people from traveling and that sort of thing.

Some of this is from an easy comparison we had last year, but it's clear that travel is picking up and that is helping drive a recovery in our business.

We're also starting to incur some expenses related to trade shows and customer events that we're now doing in person. So that's bringing back a little more cost than we had in the prior year.

There will likely be some more disruptions with travel as the pandemic situation continues.

It wasn't the first time you'd mentioned those, but I wondered if you could talk more about these. um what some of the components are and embedded in your outlook for 2022 what wood is left to chop on the gross margin side so i'll mention a few things and then chris might want to jump in i think the biggest area really was the the things we did at commercial aerospace kind of right sides of business uh both from you know a direct force count a perspective and an overhead perspective And then Doble, we saw a really nice pickup in the margin in the fourth quarter, and that's really because we did take a lot of cost out. Unfortunately, we had to do that because we went into the year, and it's not only for scout reduction, but we did shut down one facility, a small facility we acquired and moved all that production into a contract manufacturer. So all of those things, and then you had some normal things like with travel still being down, we really thought travel probably picked up more by now, but some of those SG&A costs remain lower, which help our margins as well.

And so now that the travel restrictions between the U.S. and a lot of other places have eased up, we hope that that's now going to start kicking off with some of those wide bodies like we've seen on the narrow bodies to date.

The utilities are still very conservative. Their work from home is probably a higher level than a lot of places. You know, they're limited in travel. They're limiting people coming in to their facilities.

U.S. domestic travel has picked up, but it's still slightly below 2019 levels. Those of you who have been to an airport lately are probably surprised, but this is what the TSA statistics show. It's important to understand that business travel remains soft, and air travel in Europe and overall international travel are still well below 2019 levels.

And the discretionary cost, things like travel and trade shows and things like that. We know they're still going to be mitigated, but at a point in time, you're going to see increases in our SG&A compared to the back half of 20, because we do have to travel.

Nov 19, 2020 / receipt, needs a key / Gary, CEO | earnings call 2020-11-19 | transcript 0898c141-07ef-4df8-ab39-47cad291cee2 | chars 32374-32632 | segment 33

And what we did is we, across the company, we pretty much stood on all discretionary spending, such as obviously travel and and that was outside of our control. So we do a lot of traveling around this company with the double going out to sites, and if that becomes zero, there's an immediate cost saving there. The same with the test. So travel is a big part of it.
