And the only time you see weird things, I was recently traveling in Indiana And there was a long-term competitor that it wasn't that they were doing anything irrational. It was their business is really struggling. And you see some signs of that of when organizations get squeezed too much, you see some competitors that either disappear or they have to downsize their operations.

I remember the first one after a trip I'd done with Bob. He was regarded as frugal, the cheapest CEO in America. The fact that he shares hotel rooms with other Fastow employees when he travels. On all my trips with Bob, I shared a hotel room. And he wore used suits. And they painted somewhat of a character about Bob. But I think in many ways they missed the point.

As is typical of April, we held our customer expo. A few of us actually traveled back yesterday. The expo was finished on Wednesday evening and flew back on Thursday morning. We had, similar to what we witnessed in 2024, record attendance by customers at the event.

Last year surprised us a bit because coming out of COVID, the first two years in 22 and 23 that we had the show, It was a very subdued event because a lot of organizations either weren't traveling yet or they were doing limited traveling and it was so difficult to travel internationally that we weren't getting international folks. And so folks weren't coming from Canada or up from Mexico for the event. This year I can tell you firsthand that we had a record number of attendees from our business unit in Mexico because I had the opportunity to speak to a large group that was gathered.

On top of that, our SG&A dollars in the fourth quarter of 2024 were largely in line with the first three quarters of 2024, as investments in onsite staffing, technology and data, and sales travel were offset with greater control over more discretionary costs.

But if you remove sales-related travel, which I believe is contributing to the improved signings we've experienced in 2024, then remaining spending on non-sales travel, meals, and supplies was down 8.7%. Viewed in this context, we believe we are effectively managing expenses and expect to leverage when growth accelerates.

First, we continue to make investments in travel, hardware, and personnel to support near and intermediate-term growth. This won't necessarily be to any greater degree than was true in the first quarter of 2024, but it was a reason for deleverage in the period and could be again if growth doesn't accelerate in the second quarter.

For instance, more favorable comparisons and good expense discipline produced flattish costs and modest leverage around selling-related transportation, information technology, and spending on travel, meals, and supplies.

Relative to the second quarter of 2023, the organization tightened its management of discretionary expenses, with spending on travel, meals, and supplies being down 0.6% year-to-year, and continued moderation of growth in our FTE count.

And the message is we need to get there. Now, what was the impact of that? If I think about the travel, meals, supplies, et cetera, that was about a 10 basis point impact on our business in terms of overall profit impact. If I think about the increase in base pay, that comes from higher absolute headcount, that comes from higher part-time hours, you know, those sorts of things, you know, that would have been about a 450 basis point impact to margin. Now, that was offset by the fact that incentive compensation was down because last year was such a strong year relative to this year. But those are areas that as an organization we need to tighten up a lot of our behavior and patterns to reflect more of the environment that we're in. And, again, I expect that we'll make progress on that in the third quarter.

Third, the blue team did not adjust spending quickly enough to the slower macro environment, with variable costs for meals, travel, supplies, all increasing double digits. Also, while lower incentive compensation produced leverage in the second quarter, We continue to have growth in headcount and part-time hours that exceed sales growth. I would expect us to tighten this spending appreciably in the third quarter of 2023.
